"Actually, I came to see how you were doing, Miss Alexandra. I was worried about
you."
Her fan fluttered in her grasp. "How very kind you are."
Chapter 27 398
She uttered a soft sob. "I had never been so frightened. Not knowing what would happen
to me or if I'd ever come home again."
Beau cupped her elbow and guided her back to her chair. "Perhaps you'd like something
to calm your nerves."
"Yes, please." She accepted the snifter of brandy he poured for her.
"Did Trey learn who kidnapped you?" Beau asked as he sat down in a chair near the
settee she sat on.
Alex gazed down at her hands. She couldn't lie if she looked at him. "No. My kidnapper
was too smart for Trey. Although he believes Andrew Leroux is behind everything, he can't
prove it, so won't move against him."
"Andrew can be a dangerous man. Perhaps, you should go visit relatives until this is
finished."
"Oh, I couldn't leave here right now." She looked up at Beau with frightened eyes. "You
don't think he'll try it again do you? I don't think I could go through that again."
He patted her hand. "Don't fret so, Miss Alexandra. Trey will keep that from happening."
"He didn't stop it the first time."
Beau's nostrils flared. "He wasn't prepared. This time he is."
Chapter 27 399
"Why would someone kidnap me?" Her eyes filled with unshed tears.
"You are a very beautiful woman."
"Flatterer." Alex wanted to snort. Instead, she fanned herself and batted her eyes. "I'm
sure there's a lot of people who would disagree with you."
He gave her a dazzling smile. "Then they are blind, Miss Alexandra."
"WHY IS SHE being so nice to him?" whispered Trey.
Andrew glanced over at Trey for a second before going back to his vigil at the peephole
they placed to spy on Beau and Alexandra. "What would you expect? Her to hog tie him
and beat a confession out of him?"
"That's what I'd do," mumbled Trey. "I don't like this. They've been talking for at least
ten minutes and he hasn't said a thing. He's not going to raise to the bait."
"We don't know that for sure." Although Andrew silently agreed with Trey, he knew
they had to give Miss Alexandra enough time to try everything to get Beau to confess.
SHE FELT THE conversation start to whined down. Beau would slip away if she
didn't get him to confess. Her fan moved methodically. Somehow, she had to get him to

talk, but how. Alex rubbed her brow.
"Well. Miss Alexandra. I'll be taking my leave now."
She stood at the same time. "Oh, must you?"
Her skirt wrapped itself around her ankles, pitching her forward into Beau's arms. The
brandy she never drank soaked his shirt. "Oh no." She tried patting it with the hanky she
kept up her sleeve. "I am so sorry, Mr. Beau."
His first reaction was fury, which he quickly disguised. He gave a strained laugh. "It's all
right, Miss Alexandra. I'll just go home and__"
"No! I mean, please let me make this up to you. I can have Fluerette clean it in no time."
"Why are you so nervous, Miss Alexandra? Is something wrong?"
Alex could feel her heart beating too fast. She had to turn this around fast. "Nothing is
wrong." She glanced toward the door. "It's just Trey has changed since all this started. He
is jealous of everyone."
"Even me?"
"Especially you." Alex blushed.
"Why, Miss Alexandra."
She placed a hand on her face, feeling the heat rise. "Well you are a very handsome

man."
"Thank you."
The heat of his gaze bothered her. Not knowing what he thought made matters worse.
When he took a step toward her, she took one back.
"Do I frighten you?"
"No." When he stepped closer again she forced herself to stay put. His cool fingers
brushed a stray hair behind her ear. She giggled nervously.
Beau grew bolder, caressing the right side of her neck with his fingers. "How did Trey
get so lucky?"
Her eyes widened as she tried not to react to the intimate caress.
"He has always had luck like this. You know he doesn't deserve you. Yet, he always
ends up on top." He walked around her. "When we were children he was always the best
child. If we raced, either by foot or by horse, he always won. He'd catch the biggest fish
when we went fishing. The girls liked him more."
"But you..."
"There was never room for me. Even my own parents wanted to know why I couldn't be
more like Trey. It drove me crazy."
Chapter 27 402
Alex just stood there, feeling his fingers slide across her collarbone to the other shoulder
as he continued to circle her.
"I was supposed to be the one who did everything best, not Trey." He gripped her left
shoulder. "No one cared, though."
"Beau, you're hurting me."
He loosened his grip. Standing behind her, he whispered in her ear. "So I took matters
into my own hands."
"How?"
"Why by making sure Trey's life wasn't perfect." [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
